Poison’s Dance Release Date!

Poison’s Dance, the third book in my fairytale retelling series, will be releasing August 26, 2020. You can follow this link to see the book page on Amazon and pre-order the ebook.

I’m so excited to share this book with you! Alex’s character arc really starts to shine in this book, and I really hope the pay-off of watching him stumble through lots of mistakes in the first two books is worth it in this book.

I can’t reveal the cover yet, but even this teaser that my cover designer put together is stunning!

About the book:
If he falls to the lure of the curse, the dance might trap him forever.

Alex has survived his first year as high king. The new counsel has improved cooperation between the kingdoms, and peace seems achievable. When the Tuckawassee queen sends him an invitation he can’t refuse, Alex must once again face his greatest threat for the sake of peace.
Princess Tamya of Tuckawassee, along with her eleven sisters, has danced from sunset until sunrise every night of her life. It is her gift and her curse. When Queen Valinda wishes to use the power their cursed dance gives them to rule all of Tallahatchia, Tamya must decide if she will do what is right even if it betrays her own sister.

Daemyn Rand has survived a hundred years’ worth of battles. All he wants to do now is safely marry his princess. Will he be forced to choose between the love of his life and the high king he has loyally served for years?

They have faced certain death before. This time, they might not make it out alive.

Don’t miss this re-envisioning of the Twelve Dancing Princesses fairy tale.

Book Description:

Men are cruel beings who care only for themselves and must be avoided at any cost. After all, Diamond’s own father gambled her away once. What other terrible fates might await her if people knew she existed?

Seth Stendahl is an alchemist with a middling proficiency in the Rohesian tongue. After growing up with and surviving six sisters, there shouldn’t be anything too difficult for him to master – except maybe breaking his leg and being locked in the top of a ruined watchtower.

Good Friday Traditions

This year, our normal Good Friday traditions are going to look a little different. Good Friday service tonight is live streamed. Normal family gatherings will happen virtually or not at all. My church always holds an Easter morning song service where we gather and sing Good Friday and Easter hymns. This year, the pianist will be live streamed while the rest of us sing in the small groups of our families. For a non-musical family like mine, it’s a struggle.

Maybe the extra time will give us the ability to sit down and truly ponder what this day means for us as Christians. Or maybe we’ll go about our day and forget it is Good Friday. If you’re still working (like I am) the day can feel like a normal Friday.

But I have one odd Good Friday tradition that I thought I would share with you today. I was an English Minor in college, and while not an Old English geek by any means (I have yet to teach myself to write or read the actual Old English), I love many of the poems written in that time.

“The Dream of the Rood” is a Good Friday poem written around the same time as Beowulf. It starts out with an unknown poet having a dream. In that dream, he sees the cross of Calvary, and the personified cross then tells the dreamer the Good Friday story from its perspective.

I find it a very fascinating poem in that it is such a strange mix of early medieval Christianity and Anglo-Saxon warrior mythology. It portrays Christ’s death in a way the people of that day could understand, as a warrior king striding into battle, but a battle won not by fighting but by willingly enduring a torturous death. And the poem shows the cross as Christ’s loyal thane (a warrior fighting under his leader). The tree agonizes over the fact that it cannot fight off Christ’s enemies, but instead is ordered to stand firm and let this tragedy happen.

I love the poem because it makes me think. From a human perspective, Jesus looked weak and helpless as He was nailed to the cross. He was mocked and ridiculed by those who taunted him to come down, though they did not believe He could.

Yet, He was God Almighty. He could have come down from that cross. He could have unleashed a host of angels to fight off His enemies. He did not have to stay, suffer, and die.

But He did, willingly, to save His people.

So, here is my favorite section from the poem (from the part where the cross is talking so the “I” here is the tree). I’ll provide a link to the rest of it at the end.

“It happened long ago—I remember it still—
I was hewn down at the holt’s end
stirred from my stock. Strong foes seized me there,
worked in me an awful spectacle, ordered me to heave up their criminals.
Those warriors bore me on their shoulders
until they set me down upon a mountain.
Enemies enough fastened me there.
I saw then the Lord of Mankind
hasten with much courage, willing to mount up upon me. (28-34)

“There I dared not go beyond the Lord’s word
to bow or burst apart—then I saw the corners of the earth
tremor—I could have felled all those foemen,
nevertheless I stood fast. (35-38)

“The young warrior stripped himself then—that was God Almighty—
strong and firm of purpose—he climbed up onto the high gallows,
magnificent in the sight of many. Then he wished to redeem mankind.
I quaked when the warrior embraced me—
yet I dared not bow to the ground, collapse
to earthly regions, but I had to stand there firm.
The rood was reared. I heaved the mighty king,
the Lord of Heaven—I dared not topple or reel. (39-45)

“They skewered me with dark nails, wounds easily seen upon me,
treacherous strokes yawning open. I dared injure none of them.
They shamed us both together. I was besplattered with blood,
sluicing out from the man’s side, after launching forth his soul. (46-49)

“Many vicious deeds have I endured on that hill—
I saw the God of Hosts racked in agony.
Darkness had covered over with clouds
the corpse of the Sovereign, shadows oppressed
the brightest splendor, black under breakers.
All of creation wept, mourning the king’s fall—
Christ was upon the cross. (50-56)

How are you handling this change to your Good Friday traditions this year? Any traditions you are still able to do?

Writing Update:

I’ve currently set aside working on Blades book 6 at the moment. It has been giving me trouble, and over the years, I’ve learned it is sometimes best to set aside a book and write something else for a while.

While I haven’t been writing Blades, I have been working on Poison’s Dance (Beyond the Tales #3) and it has been coming along nicely. I’m actually in the climax right now and should hopefully finish it this spring yet. That means it will probably release in August, like Midnight’s Curse did.

Right now, I probably won’t start working on Blades book 6 until late summer or fall. That means, at the earliest, it won’t release until about December. I know that is about a year later than I had planned, but sometimes creativity works that way. I don’t want to rush this book. Not when so many of you are counting on this return to Acktar being amazing.

My Review
I normally don’t read contemporary Christian romance. It just isn’t my thing. But Jaye L. Knight’s fantasy stories are some of my favorite books, so I decided to take a chance on reading her books under her contemporary pen name.
I’m glad I did! I loved this book so much and couldn’t put it down. I loved all the details, from a main guy who drives an old truck to the main girl’s intense soul-searching.
This is not just a fluffy, feel-good romance. It deals with deep topics, from suicide to depression. Much of the book takes place in a bar. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But it is very real and raw and beautiful in its healing.
Still, there are plenty of swoony scenes and sigh-worthy romance, even if it stays on the clean end of things.
I can’t recommend this author enough, and I can’t wait to read the rest of this series!

Book Review – Cry of the Raven

A week ago, one of my most highly anticipated 2020 releases finally released! I was so excited to read the final book in the Ravenwood Saga by Morgan Busse, and the book didn’t disappoint!

Cry of the Raven As War Looms, Will Her Power Be Enough to Save the Ones She Loves?

Lady Selene Ravenwood has come into her full power as a dreamwalker–a power greater than any in history. She embraces her new role as Nightwatcher, able to intercede for her people in the dream world, but the dark shadow of war draws ever closer.

Working together, the Great Houses come up with a plan to secure the borders from the approaching Dominia Empire. But dissension, conflict, and suspicion threaten to destroy their tenuous treaty, and as the empire burns a path across their lands, Damien Maris starts to lose his ability to raise the waters, leaving the lands vulnerable to the empire’s attacks.

The only one who can keep the Great Houses unified and restore her husband’s power is Selene. But it will require that she venture deep into the dream world to confront the enemies of her past who will do anything to stop her power. Will it be enough, or will both worlds fall under the empire’s might?

Find the book on Amazon

Visit the author’s website

My Review:

In this book, Selene really comes into her own. In the first two books, Damien has to be the rock for both of them since she is still struggling with her past and coming to the Light.

In this one, both of them still have struggles, but Selene is strong enough that Damien can lean on her just as much as she leans on him. It makes for a beautiful relationship and a wonderful example of what marriage should look like.

This book really starts to put the pieces together from the previous two books. There were a lot of threads from book one that were wrapped up in this book. Things that seemed to be side tangents in that book became important in this book. So well done!

The worldbuilding came to full force in this book, and I could see all the ways the author had been carefully building for this book in the previous ones. It was so cool to see the way Selene learned to use her dreamwalking at full strength and what she was able to do with it.

There is so much I could say about this book! The ending is amazing and so tense! The audiobook is well done, and I couldn’t stop listening!

Writing Update & Survey

Happy New Year!

A New Year is always a good time to reassess and evaluate. Look behind with 20/20 hindsight. Look ahead to try to wisely plan (as much as we humans can plan anyways).

2019 was an interesting year. I didn’t publish what I thought I would, though the launch of Midnight’s Curse went better than expected. Thanks to Midnight’s Curse (and the new cover on Dagger’s Sleep), it and Dagger’s Sleep are now outselling Dare, which was previously my best selling book. I made a lot of new author friends. Spent time deepening friendships with my current writer friends. It was over all an another amazing year to thank God for.

Glass Slipper

Update on Deceive

*wince* Um, yeah. *wince again*
Thank you to everyone who has been emailing me and messaging me asking about a release date for Deceive. It is still delayed, and I don’t know when it will release. After all the bugging the characters did about writing more books, when I actually sit down to write it, they aren’t playing nice. I think they are grumpy at me or something, lol.

My current plan is that Deceive and Poison’s Dance (the next Beyond the Tales book) will probably release in the summer or fall of this year. I will probably spend the beginning of this year writing both books, then editing and releasing them within a few months of each other. It all depends on how much trouble the books give me (and Deceive is already proving to be a problem child).

The Blades of Acktar 5th Anniversary!

On a happier note, this year will mark 5 years since Dare released! (June 2 to be exact!). I’m thinking we need to do something fun to celebrate, and I’ve been bouncing around a few ideas.

I’ve put together a survey of a few of the ideas I’ve been considering. If you would take the time to go through it, I would appreciate it!

Click this link to access the survey!

Thanks once again for your patience for Deceive! I hope it will be such an awesome book that it will make up for the long wait! 🙂 And, hopefully, the release for Poison’s Dance won’t be far behind it!

About the Book

“Don’t you know? Animals like you have no soul.”

Could God ever love a half-blood all of society looks upon with such fear and disdain? Jace once believed so, but when a tragic loss shatters the only peace he’s ever known, his faith crumbles as the nagging doubts he’s tried to put behind him descend on his grieving heart. With them come the haunting memories of the bloodstained past he longs to forget, but can never escape.

Taken from home at a young age and raised to serve the emperor, Kyrin Altair lives every day under a dangerous pretense of loyalty. After her unique observation skills and perfect memory place her into direct service to the emperor, Kyrin finds herself in further jeopardy as it becomes increasingly difficult to hide her belief in Elôm, the one true God.

Following the emperor’s declaration to enforce the worship of false gods under the penalty of death, many lives are endangered. But there are those willing to risk everything to take a stand and offer aid to the persecuted. With their lives traveling paths they never could have imagined, Jace and Kyrin must fight to overcome their own fears and conflicts with society as they become part of the resistance.
