Tattered Slippers Release Week – Wrought of Silver and Ravens

This week is the release week for the Tattered Slippers 12 Dancing Princesses retelling challenge books! (including my release Poison’s Dance!). There is a really cool official blog tour going on for all of these books, complete with a giveaway, so click here for the schedule to find fun interviews, guest posts by the authors, and reviews of these six books!

Today’s release is Wrought of Silver and Ravens by E.J. Kitchens.

Wrought of Silver and Ravens

Book Description:

Of Magic Made #1
The rarest magic is the most dangerous.

Athdar Owain is a hunted wanderer, one determined to keep his secrets and the treasure he carries safe at all costs. When he rescues the Kingdom of Giliosthay’s prince from raiders, he’s rewarded by being forced into the king’s elite Silver Guard. While this gives Athdar a temporary home and some protection from those hunting him, it also makes him responsible for the young prince, who still bears curses from the raiders, and seven enchantress princesses with curses as mysterious and dangerous as their brother’s.

Princess Thea of Giliosthay is a Realm Walker. Betrayed by a trusted guard, her rare gift of enchantment is used to curse her brother and trap herself and her six sisters into a nightly dance with dragons in a secret Realm. The Realm’s prince has the ability to take and twist her magic for his own purposes, and Thea fears what those might be. For when one dances with a prince, a kingdom might be at stake.

Athdar alone can save them, but to trust enchanters is to risk exposure. And Athdar isn’t sure where his loyalties lie.

Wrought of Silver and Ravens is a clean adventure-romance retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses set in The Magic Collectors story world.

Tattered Slippers Release Week – The Dancing Princess

This week is the release week for the Tattered Slippers 12 Dancing Princesses retelling challenge books! (including my release Poison’s Dance!). There is a really cool official blog tour going on for all of these books, complete with a giveaway, so click here for the schedule to find fun interviews, guest posts by the authors, and reviews of these six books!

Each year, a group of fairy tale authors sets a challenge to write a retelling of a fairy tale, then release those books together for cross promotion and to build hype for that particular tale. So these books aren’t one series or related to each other except that they are all retellings of the 12 Dancing Princesses fairy tale.

I’m so excited to share about all of these books, and I’m especially excited to finally share Poison’s Dance, where Alex’s, Daemyn’s, and Rosanna’s adventures continue!

Today’s release is The Dancing Princess by Kendra E. Ardnek, who also happens to be the organizer of this fairy tale group challenge each year. She puts a ton of work into helping all of the authors in the group get their books ready, and she deserves an extra round of applause for making this group release happen!

The Dancing Princess

Book Description:

A Twist of Adventure #5
Plagued by nightmares for the last few years, Katrine only wanted answers. Instead, she finds herself trapped in a tangled web of melody as she tries to free a cursed king and his brothers. No one deserves existence such as theirs, but dare she risk her very life?

Kendra E. Ardnek is the self-proclaimed Arista of Fairy Tales. She lives in the Piney Woods of East Texas with her dragon babies and massive herd of mini-giraffes, and she is still waiting for one of of her fifty nutcrackers to come to life and marry her. When not writing, you can usually find her sitting in a random box, and she’s frequently known to act before she thinks.

About Poison’s Dance:

If he falls to the lure of the curse, the dance might trap him forever.

Alex has survived his first year as high king. The new counsel has improved cooperation between the kingdoms, and peace seems achievable. When the Tuckawassee queen sends him an invitation he can’t refuse, Alex must once again face his greatest threat for the sake of peace.

Princess Tamya of Tuckawassee, along with her eleven sisters, has danced from sunset until sunrise every night of her life. It is her gift and her curse. When Queen Valinda wishes to use the power their cursed dance gives them to rule all of Tallahatchia, Tamya must decide if she will do what is right even if it betrays her own sister.

Daemyn Rand has survived a hundred years’ worth of battles. All he wants to do now is safely marry his princess. Will he be forced to choose between the love of his life and the high king he has loyally served for years?

They have faced certain death before. This time, they might not make it out alive.

Dagger’s Sleep Audiobook

This week Dagger’s Sleep released on audiobook! I’m so excited to have this book finally available in audiobook for everyone (like me) who adores listening to books while driving or doing housework. You can find it here on Audible and here on audiobooks.com. You can listen to a sample on Audible or Amazon if you’re curious how it sounds.

Dagger’s Sleep was produced by Tantor, an audiobook company that produces a LOT of fairy tale audiobooks. I should know. I personally own most of them, lol. I’m so excited to have Dagger’s Sleep join their fairy tale library!

Because Dagger’s Sleep was produced by an audiobook company, it isn’t exclusive to Audible. You’ll be able to find it pretty much everywhere audiobooks are sold, and its available to libraries! So if you can’t afford audiobooks, consider asking your library to add it to their elibrary.

Tantor will also be producing the audiobooks for Midnight’s Curse (scheduled to release Sept. 23) and Poison’s Dance (release yet to be determined).

Dagger’s Sleep is narrated by the amazing Emily Lawrence, and she did a great job working with all the various accents and voices. She really brings Tallahatchia alive, and I’m so excited with how the narration turned out!

Do any of you like audiobooks? Do you listen to them a lot or infrequently? Perhaps never?

If you like audiobooks (fairy tale audiobooks specifically), here’s a list of a bunch of other fairy tale books that are available on audiobook.

Since I have listened to all but one series on this list, you can find my reviews of these books on my Goodreads page in my fairytale book list. Feel free to message me if you want more in depth review about a book.

Produced by Tantor:

Four Kingdoms by Melanie Cellier (in the process of releasing)

Beyond the Four Kingdoms by Melanie Cellier

Firethorn Chronicles by Lea Doue

Andari Chronicles by Kenley Davidson

Kingdom Chronicles by Camille Peters (currently only book 1 available, but more are coming)

The Swan King by Nina Clare

Fairy Tale Kingdoms Series by Shari L. Tapscott (this is the only series on this list I haven’t listened to yet)

Other Fairy Tale Books by Indie Authors on Audiobook:

Fairytales of Folkshore by Lucy Tempest (first 3 books in the series available, wraps up one story arc)

Thorn by Intisar Khanani (produced by Harper Audio. This book was originally published indie, then picked up by Harper Collins)

Poison’s Dance Release Date!

Poison’s Dance, the third book in my fairytale retelling series, will be releasing August 26, 2020. You can follow this link to see the book page on Amazon and pre-order the ebook.

I’m so excited to share this book with you! Alex’s character arc really starts to shine in this book, and I really hope the pay-off of watching him stumble through lots of mistakes in the first two books is worth it in this book.

I can’t reveal the cover yet, but even this teaser that my cover designer put together is stunning!

About the book:

Group Promo

I’m trying something new this year and experimenting with participating in a group promo on Bookfunnel. This group promo was open to all, so I can’t guarantee all the books participating are clean. I haven’t personally read any of them (besides mine, for course).

Writing Update:

I’ve currently set aside working on Blades book 6 at the moment. It has been giving me trouble, and over the years, I’ve learned it is sometimes best to set aside a book and write something else for a while.

While I haven’t been writing Blades, I have been working on Poison’s Dance (Beyond the Tales #3) and it has been coming along nicely. I’m actually in the climax right now and should hopefully finish it this spring yet. That means it will probably release in August, like Midnight’s Curse did.

Right now, I probably won’t start working on Blades book 6 until late summer or fall. That means, at the earliest, it won’t release until about December. I know that is about a year later than I had planned, but sometimes creativity works that way. I don’t want to rush this book. Not when so many of you are counting on this return to Acktar being amazing.

Sign up for Cover Reveal, News, & More

This is going to be a rather eclectic blog post. It has been far too long since I’ve posted, and things have begun to pile up.

In April, I pushed really hard to finish the first draft of Midnight’s Curse, the sequel to Dagger’s Sleep. I’m happy to say I finished it! Even if it took writing 55k words in 32 days. Social media and posting on here took a back seat to writing all the words.

CampNaNoWriMo Stats

Since I finished the first draft and have been lining up all the stuff to release the book, it is time to do a cover reveal and announce a release date. Yay!

Fill out the form below to join the cover reveal for Midnight’s Curse!

Why help with the cover reveal?

  • It helps an author launch a book on the right foot.
  • You get to see both the shiny new cover and the release date before anyone else.
  • You get this author’s sincere gratitude for being an awesome person. If I could give you all maple sugar cookies, I would.

The cover reveal is going to take place on May 17. That’s less than 2 weeks away. I know I’m cutting the time short, but life was too crazy for me to arrange this before now.

You don’t need to have a blog to participate. Any social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc). will work.

On that weekend, the preorder for Midnight’s Curse will go live on Amazon, and the Kindle version of Dagger’s Sleep is going to be on sale for $.99. So there will be a lot to celebrate!

Here’s the form for the Cover Reveal

I’m so excited to reveal this cover to all of you! Savannah Jezowski of Dragonpress Designs did this cover, and it’s amazing. She’s the same person who designed the new cover for Dagger’s Sleep, and as amazing as that cover is, I think the one for Midnight’s Curse is even more stunning.

RealmAward_2inchSpeaking of Dagger’s Sleep, it was announced a couple of weeks ago that Dagger’s Sleep is a finalist for a Realm Award for the Fantasy category. It is such an honor to see Dagger’s Sleep alongside all the other amazing finalists. You can see a full list of the finalists here.

Friend Features

Several books by author friends and acquaintances have released in the past couple of weeks, and I wanted to highlight a few here.

Flight of the RavenFlight of the Raven by Morgan Busse released on April 30. It is book 2 in her Ravenwood Saga and continues the story of Selene and Damien. It is Christian fantasy published by Bethany House.

I’m not going to say tons about it now since I’ll be posting about it (well, fangirling about it) as part of the blog tour at the end of May. But you can find my review here on Goodreads and here is the link to the book on Amazon.

I’ve enjoyed all of this author’s books and I can’t wait for book 3 in this series to release!

The Lady and the Wish by J.M. Stengl released on April 25. It is book 4 in the Faraway The Lady and the WishCastle series and is a retelling of the King Thrushbeard fairy tale. All of the Faraway Castle books are adorable fairy tale retellings, and I can’t wait for the next book in this series! If you have read Dagger’s Sleep or enjoy books like K.M. Shea’s Timeless Fairy Tale series, then you will want to pick up the Faraway Castle series.

Besides, isn’t that cover simply gorgeous?

Here is the link to find the book on Amazon and here is the link to my review on Goodreads.

RomanovFinally, today is the release day for Romanov by Nadine Brandes. It is a historical fantasy/retelling of Anastasia, and I’ve been dying to get my hands on it from the moment I knew she was writing this book. I haven’t started reading it yet, but I’m sure it is going to be as amazing as all her other books!

Here’s the link for the book on Amazon.

Congratulations to all of these authors on their recent releases!

Do you know of any other new releases that you would like to tell everyone about? Feel free to leave your recommendations in the comments.

Also, don’t forget to sign up for the cover reveal and release date announcement for Midnight’s Curse. I’m really excited to share this book with you!

Introducing Fairy Tale Central

When I heard that several online friends were starting a website to highlight fairy tales and fairy tale retellings, I was super excited to feature their website’s launch on my blog.

Dagger's Sleep_Internet UseI LOVE fairy tale retellings. I grew up on Gail Carson Levine’s fairy tale retellings and have since discovered a whole wealth of traditionally published and indie published authors who write fairy tale retellings, including KM Shea and Melanie Cellier, who are among my favorites (both are indie authors who write funny, clean fairy tales).

Last year, I released my own fairy tale retelling Dagger’s Sleep, a retelling of Sleeping Beauty with a few hints of allegorical elements. I’m working on writing Midnight’s Curse, the sequel to Dagger’s Sleep and a Cinderella retelling.

So without further ado, here is Fairy Tale Central!

Once Upon a Time two girls had a dream. A dream of a fairy tale site, an internet library, if you will, for all the fairy tale lovers of the land to gather and converse. To learn, to read, to fangirl/boy, to bask in the goodness that is fairy tales.

As this dream blossomed, the two girls recruited a third. Because, after all, all good fairy tales come in themes of three.

With the third member in place, the girls got to work. The dream began to take shape, until it was no longer just a dream. But something real.

Introducing…

FAIRY TALE CENTRAL

This newly launched site run by Arielle Bailey, Faith White, and Christine Smith, is your source for all things fairy tales.

Every month a single fairy tale will be featured, and posts will include:

  • Reviews for retellings/shows/movies/etc.
  • Essay, origin, and discussion posts on the featured fairy tale
  • Interviews with fairy tale retelling authors
  • Galleries featuring fairy tale artists and artisans
  • And a whole lot more!

The FTC’s goal is to unlock the magic that is fairy tales and build a community of fellow fairy tale enthusiasts. Arielle, Faith, and Christine are thrilled to share this new fairy tale centric space and connect with all you epic fairy tale fans!

You can CLICK HERE to find the site and join the Fairy Ring! (Don’t worry, you won’t be enchanted or cursed.) And, if you want to connect even more, you can find the FTC on:

(If you’re inclined to share about the FTC in those places too, you may or may not be blessed by a fairy godmother. *smile, smile*)

Do tell a friend, or a dragon, or the fairy living in the hollow tree behind your house. All humans and mythological creatures alike are welcome!

Doesn’t it sound like a cool site? I know I’m excited to follow their posts!

In case you didn’t hear yet, last week the finalists for the Realm Award were announced, and Dagger’s Sleep is a finalist in the Fantasy category!

Realm Award Finalists!

I am really honored that Dagger’s Sleep made it this far, especially considering how many amazing fantasy books were released by Christian authors last year.

The winners of the Realm Awards will be announced at the Realm Makers Conference this year, and I’m going! Realm Makers is always an amazing experience, and I’m excited to be going again this year!

Are you excited for the launch of Fairy Tale Central? Do you read fairy tale retellings?

Fun Fiction Friday – Waking Beauty

Today’s book Waking Beauty is one that I was excited to read from the moment I saw it in Enclave’s release line up. I was even more excited after I attended the Facebook release party that Sarah Morin and Morgan Busse co-hosted to celebrate their releases Waking Beauty and Heir of Hope.

About the Book

What would happen if the Sleeping Beauty refused to wake up?

This rescue isn’t going at all how he planned. Secondhand hero Prince Arpien intends to gain a throne and the Sleeping Beauty’s heart with a single kiss when he wakes her from the evil fairy’s curse. But kissing the princess is only the beginning of a series of unforeseen obstacles: man-eating bugs, deadly spindles, talking lapdogs, and fiery pickles. The Sleeping Beauty is the biggest complication of all.

Princess Brierly is Beautiful and fairy-Gifted, but also . . . daft. After one hundred years of sleep imprisonment, Brierly refuses to believe this rescue is anything more than a tantalizing but doomed dream.

Arpien is drawn to the vibrancy beneath Brierly’s indifferent exterior. Can they reclaim her kingdom? Do they dare trust in the Prince of the old tales to help them battle the evil fairy who cursed Brierly? What is the price of waking beauty?

This is not the story of an innocent damsel-in-distress or her cardboard rescuer. It is a full coming-of-age struggle in a world where truth shifts as often as dreams.

About the Author

SarahMorin0025

Sarah E. Morin has three great passions in life: God, books, and working with young people. She has written articles and poetry for local publications and international periodicals in the museum field. Her dramatic works range from a musical about Susan B. Anthony to fairy tale poetry. She enjoys performing her work, especially pieces that allow her to dress up in her queen costume.

Sarah E. serves as Youth Experience Manager (kid wrangler) at an interactive history park. Her 100 youth volunteers are her best consultants in the fields of humor, teenage angst, and spinning wheels (which, they assure her, are not hazardous to anyone but Sleeping Beauty).

My Recommendation

This book was not what I expected. At all. When it arrived, I opened the box to find a tome rather than a slim novel as I’d been expecting (if I’d checked the page count before hand, I would’ve realized it is 480 pages long).

This is an epic, not a quick, easy-read fairy tale.

The beginning was a little slow for me. The writing style reminded me a lot of Lewis Carroll (think Alice in Wonderland or the poem The Jabberwocky). There are a lot of made-up words and things that the reader has to figure out as they go along as well as a number of long strings of titles such as Peerless Prince, etc. It’s a style that evokes an older, whimsical style of writing. It is fun writing, but a little difficult to get into until you get used to it.

Besides the writing, the story also unfolded slowly. Each piece of the puzzle was revealed after the characters do a lot of character-stuff and character reflection. Overall, I’d rate this as a very, very character-driven novel rather than plot-driven. As a plot-driven reader, I felt like it could’ve been trimmed a little bit, especially in the beginning when (to me) it felt like the characters weren’t accomplishing anything for several chapters.

But once I reached the end? It was worth it. Totally. Once the action started happening, it drew all the pieces together. The three different POV characters all had their own role to play in the ending, and it had a few twists that I wasn’t expected (and a few I was).

While I liked all three characters, Nessa was my favorite. Probably because she is the most straightforward of the three POV characters. While the POV switched between Arpien, Brierly, and Nessa, I was never confused by whose head I was in. They all have very distinct voices.

My favorite part of the book was the theme of dreams vs. reality. While Brierly is the one that refuses to believe she is actually awake and not still stuck in dreams, she isn’t the only one who is stuck in delusions. In a way, all the characters have their own delusions, their own Dreams, that they need to wake from in order to find Reality. It made me think about what I might be deceiving myself with and what thorns I might be clinging to because I believe I’m strong enough to handle them on my own.

Have you read Waking Beauty yet? Or is it on your TBR list?

Cover Reveal – As Wish Made of Glass

Today I’m taking a break from Dare‘s release to participate in the cover reveal for A Wish Made of Glass by Ashlee Willis.

Isn’t this cover stunning?

AWishMadeofGlassFinalAbout the Book

Deep in a forest glade, the fey folk dance with Isidore, a young human child. Their kinship is the very fabric of her childhood. When her mother dies and her world darkens with sorrow, Isidore finds her belief in the fey folk wavering.

The love of her new step-sister, Blessing, proves an unexpected gift in her time of need. Yet even as their friendship blooms, Isidore begins to see that Blessing is everything she herself has always wanted to be, but is not. Jealousy grips Isidore as she watches this beautiful new sister steal away all she holds dear.

Driven to desperation, Isidore turns to the fey folk once more. She has only one wish to claim from them, one chance to make things right. But she must tread carefully. For wishes, like hearts, are easily broken. And obtaining the one thing she desires could mean destroying the one thing she truly needs.
