Adela’s Curse Cover Reveal

Today, I’m helping out Claire Banschbach reveal her cover to her upcoming release Adela’s Curse. Claire has been a great friend since I published Dare, and it’s great to see her releasing another book. If you head over to her blog today, you’ll find a list of all the other bloggers participating in the cover reveal and a link for a free prequel short story for Adela’s Curse.

Adelas Curse KINDLEAbout the Book

A witch and her master capture a young faery and command her to kill their enemy. Adela has no choice but to obey. If she does not, they will force the location of her people’s mountain home from her and kill her. To make matters even worse, the person she is to kill is only a man struggling to save his dying land and mend a broken heart.

Count Stefan is a man simply trying to forget the woman he loves and save a land crippled by drought. When a mysterious woman arrives at his castle claiming to be a seamstress, he knows she is more than she seems.

Adela enlists the help of Damian, another faery, to try and delay the inevitable. He insists she has a choice. But with the witch controlling her every move, does she?

Reminder

This is your LAST DAY to enter the Name That Character Contest (details found here). You guys have come up with so many great names, I’m not sure how I’m going to choose!

Thank you to those who have already entered the Fanart/fiction/photo/video contest. You still have a little over two weeks to enter. I can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

Contests!

In chatting with the Goodreads fangirls, I have decided to hold a couple of contests to keep all of you occupied while you wait for Defy to release. The good news is, Defy is falling together very well with a whole lot less tears and hair-tearing and forehead-thumping-on-desk than Deny. I don’t have an official release date, but I’m hoping I’ll have one by the end of March.

In the mean time, the contests! 🙂

Name That Character Contest

When I wrote Defy, I purposefully didn’t name two of the characters. Instead, I’ve decided to let you guys name them!

How it works:

  1. Fill out the form below with both a first name and a last name for each of the two characters and tell me why you think that particular name is the perfect name for that character.
  2. You may enter only 1 set of names.
  3. This contest runs from today through Feb. 18. On Feb. 19, I’ll announce 4 winners (one for each of the 2 first names and 2 last names, unless someone manages to pick the perfect first and last name pair) and 4-8 honorable mentions.
  4. The winners will receive a free ebook copy of Defy when it releases and will be mentioned in the acknowledgement section of the book. The honorable mentions will have their names also included in the acknowledgements section of the book.

The types of names I’m looking for:

In Acktar, most of the names have a Scottish, British, or Irish origin. I tried to go in families for name origins. For example, Renna and Brandi’s mother and uncle (who were brother and sister) have Spanish origin names with Annita and Leon. The royal family has Irish/Scottish origin names (Deirdre, Aengus, Rorin, Keevan, Duncan) Many of the nobles have English nobility sounding names (Like Lord Henry Alistair), while many of the people without rank have Scottish origin names (Leith, Lachlan, Hamish). Some names, I just plain made up because they sounded cool. And, of course, there are a lot of Biblical names.

Please do not submit any names that start with the letters R or L. I already have WAY too many names that start with those letters already, especially R.

Name #1 – General GENERALS NAME

He is a general in the Resistance army. He was a part of the old Acktarian army before Respen took the throne. He has been in hiding in Eagle Heights for nearly five years now. He is tall, gray-haired, and weathered.

Note: Due to the nature of his position, his last name will be mentioned more often in the book than his first name.

Name #2 – HE WHO MUST BE NAMED

Yes, all you Harry Potter fans, that reference was on purpose. 😉

He is a fourteen-year-old boy in the Resistance army. He is lanky and thin with light brown hair. He has been living in Eagle Heights for several years after him and his family fled Acktar.

Note: his first name will be used more often in the book than his last name.

Got a few names in mind? Please fill out the below form:

Fan Art/Photo/Fiction/Video Contest

I’ve also decided to hold a fan art contest. These look like a lot of fun, and I’ve never done this before, so we’ll see how it goes.

The fan art can have anything to do with The Blades of Acktar series. Take a creative photo with the books or dress up as the characters and take photos or write a fan fiction piece or make a book trailer. Get creative. Have fun. This contest is for all you fans to have fun. 🙂

How it works:

  1. You’ll be able to submit your entries between now and March 4. That gives you a whole month to come up with something crazy/cool/creative.
  2. When you enter, you’ll be entered into a drawing for 1 or more Amazon gift cards (depending on how many entries I receive). In other words, you have a chance to win something just by entering.
  3. Once I have all the entries, I’ll divide them into categories (most likely photo, fiction, video, and artwork. But these categories may change based on number of entries and the nature of the entries). Each category will be featured for one week on my blog, where fans will be able to vote on their favorites in each category.
  4. You can enter up to 5 different entries. They may be in the same category, though if they are too similar, I may ask you to pick one for the voting.

How to enter:

Email your fan photo/video/fiction/artwork to triciamingerink (at) gmail (dot) com. If the file is too big to email, please shoot me an email and we will figure out how to proceed, or send me the link to it on Youtube if it is a video.

By sending me your fan art in its various media forms, you are giving me permission to share it on my various social media sites.

So have fun! I’m looking forward to seeing what you all come up with!

Interview with Jesse Dornan – Narrator of Dare

As promised, Jesse Dornan, the narrator for the audiobook version of Dare, has agreed to a guest interview on my blog. 🙂

Dare Audiobook Cover

Hi, Jesse! Thanks for stopping by my blog today. I’ve had a lot of readers asking about the person who is narrating The Blades of Acktar, so I’m glad you were willing to oblige them.

Tell us a little about yourself. Anything you’d like to share with all The Blades of Acktar fans?

Well, I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to a family of artists.  I went to the University of Utah for my undergraduate training. I worked with some wonderful teachers in the Actor Training Program.  I had a stint in New York.  Then worked as an assistant director in Asbury Park, New Jersey. I toured the country with a children’s show, Pippi Longstocking.  I went to places I never thought I’d see.  Then it was off to Milwaukee Repertory Theatre for an internship.  There I got to work with incredibly passionate professionals. Graduate school in Sarasota Florida was the final stop for me before making my home in Chicago.  I love it here.  On the side I teach yoga, fitness, and spin classes.  That keeps me in shape and confident in front of others.  My real passion has always been acting.  I’m glad I could find a creative outlet through working on audiobooks.

Wow! You’ve sure traveled a lot! And it sounds like you definitely keep busy!

What got you interested in narrating audiobooks?

I’ve always loved and admired those that can tell a convincing story off the page.  My mom used to read to me.  She’d do all the voices and it was such a delight.  She’d often record her reading so I could play it back when she wasn’t home.  I listened to books on tape with my stepmom.  Stephen King was our favorite.   In undergrad I read a chapter of Harry Potter for a class on narration. Once I got to Chicago I was looking for work that would keep me creatively fulfilled.  ACX came across my browser one day as I was searching for Voice-over work.  In hindsight all my experiences with spoken word brought me to a new passion.  I’m thankful that narration hooked me at such a young age.

My dad read the Little House books to me when I was little. Perhaps someday I’ll have to have him record The Little House in the Big Woods just to hear him do Pa’s story voice again.

I absolutely love your rendition of the characters’ voices, especially Shad’s and Lord Alistair’s. How do you go about deciding character voices when you produce an audiobook?

I thought, oh my gosh, I have to create all these characters voices.  I wanted them to be distinct regionally, since Tricia laid out such a detailed map.  I felt like I was in Middle Earth!

Shad came to me as I was working on a theatre show Fallen Angels.  We chose to use RP or Received Pronunciation for our characters. It’s a heightened form of British.  My character, Willy just fit with Shad. Since Shad and Lord Alistair are related I wanted to use the same sort of dialect for both of them.  I used an aged British accent for Alistair.  I think he sounds a lot like Ian McKellan, who is one of my idols.

As for others, it comes to me intuitively as I read the book to myself.  Some I just throw on there and see if they sound right.  I wanted Renna to have a grounded voice, but still make it clear she was a female.  It’s actually hard for me to do a woman’s voice and not sound canned or airy.  She has to be a real person too.

Well, your choice of voices for Lord Alistair and Shad was perfect! I think most male narrators have a hard time doing women’s voices, so I was rather happy with how well Renna and Brandi turned out. I’ve heard some audiobooks where the women sounds REALLY fake.

What does your process for creating an audiobook look like?

It took me over 85 hours to produce the first book.  It was a lot of trial and error.  I discovered so much about programs like Twisted Wave and Audacity.  It took a lot of patience and time but I enjoyed the obstacles.  They helped me grow.

I record all the audio now, raw.  Then I go back and take out long pauses.  I send it off to the author and wait for their notes.  Then on the second pass I read with the text next to me and find any mistakes with words, as well incorporate notes.  While doing this I take out all the background noise, using a program called Audacity.  Then I master the track.  This involves normalizing; making all the sound levels the same, so the listener doesn’t have to ride the volume nob.  I cut the peaks of the audio down to -3 decibel’s, otherwise you might lose your hearing on the louder parts of the audio.  Then I send it off again and wait for the final approval from the author.  I’ll make tweaks if need be then send off the final product for ACX approval.

Wow! A lot of work! I certainly appreciate it. 🙂

A number of my blog readers are also indie authors who might someday be looking for a narrator for their books. Where can they contact you?

Dare is now Available as an Audiobook!

Yep, it’s official. If you’re the type of person who loves audiobooks (like me!), then Dare (The Blades of Acktar #1) is now available for you!  I’m geeking out more than a little bit about it!

Since I’ve had a lot of people ask me questions about how this all came about and how and indie author even produces an audiobook, I’ve decided to put my answers here so everyone can find them easily.

Why did you want an audiobook version?

I grew up listening to audiobooks on family road trips, and I survived my long commute to college( and I currently survive my long, downtown traffic commute) through audiobooks. I know there are a lot of people who are so busy that their main source of books are audiobooks. And there are some people who prefer audiobooks over reading for themselves.

Right now, there are only a limited number of Christian fantasy and other speculative fiction books available on audiobook. Hopefully that will continue to change as the audiobook market continues to grow.

How do you make an audiobook?

I used ACX, which is an Amazon-affiliated company. It’s to audiobooks what Kindle Publishing is for ebooks and Createspace is for print on demand paperbacks. It’s a professional way to DIY.

Or, in the case of an audiobook, collaborate with a narrator. ACX is a place where authors can find and work with narrators to produce an audiobook.

For me, the process looked like this: after Dare released in June, I posted it on ACX in late June with my specifications for a narrator. By August, I’d gotten 1 audition, but the voice wasn’t quite right and the narrator wanted way more money than was within my price range.

In August, I attended the ACFW Writer’s Conference. While there, I went to a session run by Traci Hilton, a Christian indie author of cozy mysteries, on indie publishing. She had a lot of great tips, and we spent some time in the session discussing audiobooks. She suggested going out and approaching narrators instead of waiting for them to come to you.

So early in October, I spent an evening on ACX looking through the list of narrators that meant my specifications (male, young adult(ish) voice but not too young, certain price range) and listening to their samples posted on the site. I came up with a list of six narrators that I narrowed down to three. One of those top three was already my favorite. I listened to all of three seconds of his audio sample and knew right away that he’d be perfect for Dare. But I didn’t want to get my hopes up.

I sent him a message that night, figuring it’d be a while before I heard back and the answer would probably be no.

I got a message back the next morning. Yes, he’d love to narrate Dare. He sent in an audition, and I squealed out loud when I heard it. Click here to listen to the first five minutes of Dare.

The narrator’s name is Jesse Dornan. Dare is his first full-length audiobook. I’m putting together an interview with him.

After that, he recorded the book, I listened to it several times and gave a few changes to be made, the whole thing was posted on ACX, and I approved the final version. A week after I approved it, it was up on sale on Audible.

ACX made the whole process really easy, and the risk is mostly on the narrator’s part since the narrator doesn’t get paid until the final version is approved.

Where is it available?

It can be purchased in digital format on Amazon, Audible, and iTunes.

Right now, Amazon is still processing it in their system and checking to make sure it is properly formatted for Whispersync. With Whispersync, you can flip between the Kindle version and the audio version, and it will pick up where the other one left off. I’ve never done it, so I’m not exactly sure how it works. I do know the audiobook and the Kindle version have to match nearly 100% for Amazon to approve it for Whispersync. Right now, I’m being told this could take up to a month to process.

When Whispersync is approved, however, it means that if you purchased the Kindle version of Dare, you’ll be able to purchase the audiobook at a discount.

If you’re a member of Audible, you also can purchase the audiobook at a discount.

Will it be available on CD?

No, it’s only available in digital format. However, I happen to know you can burn it onto CDs for your personal use (emphasis on personal use only. Anything else is piracy). I won’t explain how to do it here, but it is easy enough that I figured out how to do it.

Now for a giveaway!

To celebrate the release of the audiobook, I’m giving away 5 digital copies! Yay! Follow this link to enter: a Rafflecopter giveaway

A Look Back

I realized today that I haven’t blogged at all since Deny released. Not a good way to go about keeping up my social media presence.

At the beginning of December, my carpal tunnel syndrome started acting up again in my right wrist. I’m still not sure what set it off. You’d think spending 11 to 12 hours a day on the computer to get Deny out into the world would’ve caused problems, but it didn’t. But when I cut back my time on the computer to give myself a break, then it got bad again. So I cut out even more computer time (including blogging) until my wrist no longer hurt. Thankfully, the pain is gone now, so I’m back. 🙂

A New Year 2016

It’s the day after New Year’s, so it’s as good a time as any to look back and reflect. God did so many amazing things in my life this year, I’m still blown away. Especially once I started making a list.

This time last year, I had just finished writing three manuscripts for what I had called The Blades of Acktar. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with them or what publishing route God wanted me to pursue. I was waiting for my first professional edit to come back on Dare from Nadine Brandes, an editor I was just beginning to get to know. I’d just connected with Angie Brashear online and began pestering her with questions on indie publishing. And I’d just heard of Jaye L. Knight. I’d only had a blog for a few months, and I wasn’t even on Goodreads yet, much less most of the other social media sites.

Crazy, when I think about it. Now I have so many writing friends online I’m blown away. I connected with the wonderful Kim Moss through a book launch team we were on together. Angie Brashear became a prayer warrior who helped pray Deny into existence. I don’t know what I’d do without Nadine as a friend and mentor. And Jaye’s encouragement has been amazing. All the other bloggers and fellow authors who volunteered for my launch team: Claire, Shantelle, Hope, Alyssa, Abigail, Jessica, Gabriela. Sierra, my amazing critique partner who helped so much. All the fans who have contacted me or written reviews or simply interacted in some way on line. I can’t believe that a year ago, I didn’t really know any of you.

I now have two published book and a third in the process of publication. My three book series turned into four. Dare hit #1 on Amazon’s bestseller list for Christian Fantasy (sharing the list with such estimable writers as Jill Williamson, Jaye L. Knight, and Patrick Carr. Seriously never thought I’d see my books anywhere near theirs on a bestseller list!). Deny hit the #1 Hot Newest Release in Christian Fantasy for the first month after its release, and both Dare and Deny are still bouncing around in the top 20 on the Christian Fantasy bestseller list. I am so blown away by the response to these books.

I’m excited to see what God does with 2016.

Deny Blog Tour Wrap Up

ow! It was a crazy week last week!

Thank you so much to my launch team for the great interviews and reviews that you all put together. It was such fun!

And especially thanks to all of you fans and readers who have shown so much enthusiasm for Dare and Deny in this past week! It has been great to see, and I’m so humbled that my stories are touching so many people! Thanks to all of you, Dare was Amazon’s #1 Bestseller in Christian Fantasy for two days last week and Deny was Amazon’s #1 Hot New Release in Christian Fantasy for nearly the entire week! That’s pretty amazing considering all the amazing books on both of those lists!

The Facebook Party Friday night was loads of fun thanks so everyone who was able to come! For those who haven’t seen yet, Dare got its first fan art last night! Eeep!!

Hannah Rogers has given me permission to share it here. Isn’t it awesome? If you like this, please check out her Facebook fan art page. Some pretty cool stuff on there. 🙂

Now, for the last little bit of business. I have picked a winner for the signed copies of Dare and Deny that ran during the blog tour.

And the winner is….

Rachael Steele!

Thanks so much to all of you! 🙂

Character Interviews #3

I watch as Shad, Leith, Renna, and Brandi file back into the room and take their seats. Leith still has a wary look on his face. Shad glances between him and me, as if trying to figure out what questions I might have asked to set Leith on edge. I do my best not to wince. The questions I had for Leith today weren’t much better.

I sit taller in the chair, but I still can’t rest my elbows on Lord Alistair’s desk. I sit on my foot to boost myself up a few more inches. There. Much better. Or, at least, until my foot falls asleep.

I smile at my assembled characters. “All right, guys. Thanks for coming back. Let’s start with an easy one. I have a question for all of you: what is your favorite food?”

Brandi grins. “Aunt Mara’s maple sugar cookies.”

“Probably the same.” Renna shrugs.

“Venison steak slow roasted over a campfire.” Shad closes his eyes as if he can taste the steak that way.

Everyone glances towards Leith. He shrugs. “Any food that isn’t moldy or stale, I guess. Food is food.”

Brandi snorts. “You haven’t had Aunt Mara’s maple sugar cookies yet.”

“Anyway.” That was supposed to be an easy question. “Renna, if you could learn one form of self-defense, what would it be?”

“Self-defense? Like sword-fighting?” She wrinkles her nose. “I’m a healer. I don’t go around hurting people.”

“Not even to defend yourself?”

“I mean, I guess, to defend Brandi, I might try something, but I don’t think I’d be very good at it.” Renna’s frown deepens. “I don’t know what it would be.”

I nod and turn to Brandi. “Brandi, is there a situation that you never want to find yourself in?”

“Separated from Renna.” She crosses her arms and glares at me. “That would be horrible.”

“Yes, that would be.” I keep a straight face. “Shad, what is your fondest memory?”

A slow grin spreads across his face. “The day we were visiting Sierra, and I asked Jolene to go on a walk with me. She said yes.”

“I can see how that would be a very fond memory.” I take a deep breath. Now for the worst question of the morning. “Leith, if you could erase one memory, what would it be?”

Leith stiffens and sucks in a breath like I’d just stabbed him. “Why couldn’t I be asked about my fondest memory?”

“Go ahead and answer that one too if you wish.”

“Brandi naming Blizzard.” Leith grips the hilt of one of his knives. “I still have to answer the other question, don’t I?”

“Yes, I’m sorry. I’m sure Hope would be more than happy to give you a hug to apologize for asking the question. Actually, I think the whole Goodreads fangirls group would be more than happy to give you a hug.”

Leith hangs his head, his fingers flexing. When he draws in a deep breath, his shoulders give a tiny shake. “The first time my father hit me. That’s the memory I’d erase. It was the moment I realized my father hated me. I was six.”

Brandi jumps to her feet and gives Leith a hug. Renna stares at him, a soft look in her eyes that told me she would comfort Leith too if there wasn’t anyone else in the room.

I clear my throat. Best to move on past this quickly. “Shad, how would you describe your friendship with Leith? Did you ever expect to become friends with an assassin?”

“No, I can honestly say, I never expected to be friends with an assassin.” Shad’s mouth quirks a little at the corner. “But now, he’s pretty much like my brother.”

Leith’s head jerks up. “A brother?”

“Yes, a little brother who’s always getting into scrapes that I have to rescue him from.” Shad’s grin appears for a moment before he’s serious again. “My brother Jeremiah is nearly ten years younger than me, and we don’t exactly share similar interests. Maybe when he’s older we’ll be closer, but right now…” Shad shrugs.

Both he and Leith were starting to get I’m-a-guy-and-this-is-way-too-much-sharing looks on their faces. “Renna, what do you like to read?”

“Old legends, mostly. Stuff about the early kings of Acktar and all that. I don’t get to read all that often, and Stetterly doesn’t have the collection of books the way Walden does.”

“Speaking of legends and stories, I have a question for both Leith and Renna. If you found a genie in a bottle and were granted three wishes, what would you ask for?”

Both Leith and Renna blink at me with blank expressions. Finally, Leith raises an eyebrow. “Genie? Wishes? What’s that?”

“In my world, we have legends about these creatures who live in bottles who can grant wishes. They aren’t real.”

“Then why are you asking about them?”

“It’s a hypothetical question.” I sigh. “Skip the genie part. If you could have three wishes, what would they be?”

Leith shrugs. “I guess, I could wish for a lot of things, but isn’t that kind of what prayer is for? Putting your desires into God’s hands and trusting that His decisions on what to grant you are better than yours?”

“A very wise way to go about not answering that question. And Renna?”

“What Leith said.”

“It’s a good thing I’m running out of questions, because you guys are getting better at not answering them.” I flip to my last couple of notecards. “Leith, if you could wear any color besides black, what would it be?”

“Green, maybe. Tan. Something that would blend into the prairie.” Leith glances down at this black clothes. “Anything but black.”

“Anything?” Brandi cocks her head and smirks.

“Maybe not anything.” Leith eyes her.

I flip to my second to last notecard. “What was it like growing up with Vane, Leith?”

He grimaces. “Not pleasant. He enjoyed controlling the rest of us, and if we didn’t join him in bullying the others, then he made life especially difficult.”

I can tell he wasn’t going to say any more than that. I pull out the last notecard. “The last question is for Martyn, but it would cause a whole manor-full of problems if I brought him in here, and he can’t answer it anyway without giving away spoilers. So, I guess that’s it then. You all are free to go.”

Leith bolts for the door as if he’s worried I’ll change my mind. Renna tiptoes after him with her I’m-invisible-you-can’t-see-me hunched shoulders.

As she stands, Brandi raises her eyebrows at me. “You’re going to do this again for book 3, aren’t you?”

I shrug. “Probably. The fangirls really like it.”

“I’m glad. They come up with some interesting questions. Maybe next time, I’ll have to come up with a few questions of my own.” Brandi smirks and waltzes from the room.

Well, that’s all for the character interviews! Hope everyone enjoyed them!

Deny is officially out into the world! It’s available on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle.

I’m still working on getting a Paypal buy button on my website for signed paperbacks and getting it uploaded as paperback to other online retailers.

There’s still a few more stops along the blog tour the rest of the week, and this Friday is the Facebook party. You won’t want to miss out on the fun!

Black Friday Book Sale!!!

ICB_FBAd.jpg

Like most other bookworms, great books make their way onto my “things I’m thankful for” list every year. It’s hard to choose favorites, but I went ahead and picked five books I read in 2015 and am thankful for.

  1. A Time to Speak, by Nadine Brandes: Nadine happens to be my editor for The Blades of Acktar, and along the way she’s also become a friend and mentor. Dare and Deny wouldn’t be what they are without her. Not only that, but she’s an amazing writer whose books also encourage me to live each day pursuing God’s purpose in my life.
  2. The King’s Scrolls, by Jaye L. Knight: I actually stumbled upon The Ilyon Chronicles in the build up for the release of The King’s Scrolls. I’d heard a lot of good things about them, so I signed up for the blog tour, bought Resistance, and read it and The King’s Scrolls in a matter of days. Jaye has been an awesome friend online.
  3. Of the Coldblooded, by Angie Brashear: Another awesome author friend and prayer warrior. I leaned on her prayers a lot while editing Deny. Her books also make my list of top Christian fantasy
  4. Leaving Nelson, by Kim Moss: I had written off Christian contemporary YA as a genre I’d never read and enjoy until Kim and I ended up on a launch team together, and she asked if I’d be willing to review her books. I said yes, and I never regretted it. 🙂
  5. Mardan’s Mark, by Kathleen McKee: I love the unique characters in this book and that the setting in this book is also based on American geography instead of the standard medieval Europe.

I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to another great year of reading! Speaking of more reading, here’s one more thing to be grateful for. Books on sale! In honor of Thanksgiving and Black Friday, a group of independent Christian authors banded together to offer over seventy discounted books on Nov 27-30. There’s literally something for everyone.

Every single book listed on Indie Christian Books is on sale in one or more ways. Find discounted paperbacks, dozens of books offered with free shipping, $0.99 ebooks, package deals and more. Even if you have a budget of $0, new reading material awaits you.

Don’t know what to pick? The fearless Indie Christian Books team created a quiz that will generate a book list perfect for you! Check it out!

Character Interviews #2

The Blades of Acktar Blog Tour Header

After Leith, Renna, and Brandi file into Lord Alistair’s study, I stroll over to the window, bolt it shut, and jam a bobby pin into the lock. Crossing the room, I turn the key in the door’s lock and drop the key into my pocket.

When I turn, Leith is staring at me, a hand on the hilt of one of his knives. He had reason to worry. I’d locked the door and window to keep him from bolting once I started asking this next round of questions.

I settle into the huge leather chair behind the desk. My feet dangle several inches above the ground. Seriously, if I’m going to keep doing these character interviews, I was going to have to write a footstool into the room.

“All right, you three. This round of questions is to satisfy the curiosity of the Goodreads fangirls.”

“Fangirls?” Brandi’s forehead scrunches. “What are fangirls?”

“A fan girl is a girl who obsesses over something or, more often, someone with a whole lot of overexcited squealing. They sound a lot like Brandi would if she were given a whole stable of horses for her very own.”

Leith’s knees bounce like he is debating jumping from his chair and making a run for it. Renna scoots down lower as if to make herself invisible.

Brandi cocks her head. “They sound like girls I’d like to meet. Whose fangirls are they?”

“Leith’s, mostly.”

Leith’s grip tightens on his knife. “I’m not going to like these questions, am I?”

“Nope. Sorry, that’s the price you pay for having fangirls, especially ones who are excessively shipping you and Renna.”

“Shipping?” Leith’s forehead wrinkles.

“Believe me, you don’t want to know.” I pick up the first notecard. Considering the line of questioning on these, he’d figure out soon enough. “Just a reminder, you all have to be completely honest. Don’t worry, you’ll forget this conversation as soon as the story launches.”

By this point, Renna’s face has taken on a decidedly green color while Leith keeps glancing at the door. Brandi still bounces in her seat.

“Let’s start with an easy one. Leith, when you’re free, what will be the first thing you’ll want to do?”

“When? Don’t you mean if?” Leith shakes his head. “It’s highly unlikely I’ll ever be free.”

“We were over this last time. Assuming you don’t die and don’t stay bound to Respen forever, what would you want to do?” I grit my teeth. If he was stalling already, then the rest of the questions were going to be like pulling teeth. With a monkey wrench. In the mountains with no painkiller.

“I’m not sure.” He meets my gaze. “Honest. I’ve been a Blade for half my life. I don’t really know a whole lot about being someone else.”

“Okay, that is a valid answer, I guess. Though, I doubt your fangirls are going to like how vague it is.” I let a little bit of my grin to show on my face. “Leith, when you’re free, do you intend to marry?”

“What?” He shoots to his feet, the tips of his ears going red. His eyes flick towards Renna before going back to me.

Renna squeaks and slides lower in her chair. Brandi presses her hand over her mouth, but even that does nothing to hide her grin and giggles.

“Like I said, you have fangirls.” I point my stack of notecards at him. “Now answer the question.”

“I don’t know? Maybe. No. I don’t think so. I mean, I’m a Blade. Who’d want to marry me?” His shoulders sag. “I watched my father destroy my mother’s heart bit by bit. I don’t want to do that to anyone.”

“You’re not your father.” I heave a sigh. It always comes back to that with him. “But let’s assume you did decide to marry. If you did have a wedding, who would be your best man?”

Leith looks relieved that I’d asked him that question instead of who he would marry if he could. Then he frowns. “Shad, I guess. I’d ask Martyn to stand with me too, but if I were free, then Martyn…”

“Martyn might not be your friend anymore.” I finish for him. “Wish I could tell you what happens with that, but that’d be a spoiler. Last question before we move on to the others: have you had a crush on any girl besides Renna?”

His ears go red again, but he answers quickly. “No.”

“All right. Renna.” When I turn to her, she hunches her shoulders as if to make herself smaller. “Your turn for questions. What’s your opinion of Leith?”

She swallows, glances at Leith, then stares down at her lap. “I don’t know. He’s safe, I guess.”

I decide it isn’t worth it to push her farther on that subject. Getting information from her is worse than from Leith, and that is saying something. “If you were to have a wedding, who would be your maid of honor?”

“Brandi.” She glances at her sister and smiles.

Brandi grins back.

“Okay, now for the most important, burning fangirl question of them all.” I pause, and both Leith and Renna tense. Brandi leans forward. My grin widens. “Brandi, would you like to see Leith and Renna get together as a couple?”

Renna makes a choking sound in the back of her throat and stares at Brandi. Leith crosses his arms, but his foot makes scuffing motions against the rug.

Brandi grins and rolls her eyes. “Duh. Of course. Leith is already like my brother, but it’d be nice if it were official.”

Leith and Renna gape at her. It is probably a good thing they are all going to forget this conversation otherwise Brandi might be in for a stern talking to from Renna.

Character Interviews #1

The Blades of Acktar Blog Tour Header

I settle into the large, leather chair behind Lord Alistair’s desk in Walden Manor. I tap my pile of questions into a neat stack. On the other side of the desk, Renna, Brandi, Uncle Abel and Aunt Mara sit in the chairs Lord Alistair helpfully provided for this interview. Shad leans against the book cases to my right while Leith paces behind the chairs.

“All right, everyone. Let’s get this interview started. I know a few of you want to get it over with.” I hold up my stack of notecards. “We’re going to do this in several sessions over the next little bit. I have a lot of questions from some of the people who’ve read your story so far. You have to answer honestly, but without spoilers. We’re going to start with questions that relate to the first part of your story, called Dare.” I make a note to warn everyone who would read this interview that the below questions and answers might contain a few spoilers for Dare.

Renna laces her fingers together. Brandi bounces on her seat. Leith shoots a worried glance in my direction. Then again, he has good reason to be worried.

“Brandi, let’s start with you.” I pick up my first notecard. “Hannah wants to know what made you choose the story of Daniel to tell to Leith?”

She cocks her head. “I guess I’ve always loved those stories. They all have happy endings. It’s why it’s my favorite book in the Bible, well up until the confusing prophecy stuff at the end.”

“Renna, what’s your favorite book of the Bible?”

Renna doesn’t even raise her head. “Psalms.”

“I’ve got a question for Shad this time.” I meet his gaze. He raises his eyebrows at me. “What was your first thought when you caught Leith reading the Bible the first time?”

Leith’s head jerks up and he glances between me and Shad. The corners of Shad’s mouth quirk like he is trying to hide a grin. “I didn’t see what he was reading at first, so my first thought was that I had an opportunity to sneak up on him. Probably not the wisest thing to do with a Blade, but I wanted to see how he’d react. When I saw what he was reading, I wasn’t too surprised. He’d gone to all the trouble to steal the Bible, and Father had let him borrow it. It wasn’t until later than I realized he was reading for more reasons than just curiosity.”

“While we’re on the topic of how you and Leith became friends, I’ve got a question for Leith from Claire.” I suppress a grin of my own as his eyes widen. “When did you decide you could trust Shad?”

Leith rests a hand on one of the knives strapped across his chest. “I guess I knew I could trust him when he let me keep my weapons. If he trusted me that much, then surely I could trust him too. Turned out to be a wise choice.”

“Yes. The two of you make a great team.” I shuffle the notecards to the next question. “While we’re on the topic of trust, Abel and Mara Lachlan, how did you know you could trust Leith? How did you feel about Leith recovering at Stetterly Manor?”

Abel and Mara share a look before Abel turns to me. “We didn’t. Not entirely. But his general politeness helped ease some of our fears. And there’s a certain…history that also swayed our opinion.”

Renna, Brandi, and Leith all stare at the Lachlans.

Mara pats Abel’s arm. “I’m afraid we can’t say any more than that without spoilers.”

“Nope, you can’t. You’ll all figure out why in Deny.” I tap the notecards on the desk to claim everyone’s attention again. “Brandi, the last three questions are for you. How were you so optimistic about having a Blade recovering at Stetterly? Everyone else was worried.”

Brandi shrugs. “I don’t know. His horse was nice, so I guess I figured he had to be nice too.”

“What’s your favorite thing about Walden Manor?”

Brandi rolls her eyes. “The stables, duh. At Stetterly, we only had Stubborn, our mule. Walden has a whole stable full of horses.”

That’s your typical, horse-crazy thirteen-year old girl. I grin. “Final question: when is your birthday, Brandi?”

“That’s kind of a spoiler, isn’t it?” Brandi wrinkles her nose. “So I guess everyone will just have to read the story and find out, won’t they?”

“Yep.” I make a note on the next notecard. “That’s all for today. Thanks to everyone for coming.”
